About this episode

Tom Evans won UTMB, but what got him there may not be what you’d expect.

After two DNFs, years of chasing performance, and an almost obsessive relationship with Chamonix, the British ultrarunner started to realise that doing more was not always the answer. His approach changed: more recovery, less obsession with perfection, more room for family, and a different way of thinking about training.

In this episode, Tom Evans reflects on what failure taught him, how becoming a father changed his relationship with performance, why recovery has become such a central part of his training, and why learning to back off can sometimes be just as important as learning to push harder.

He also looks back on the UTMB victory he had been chasing for years — a race he says he thought about up to ten times a day after his 2024 DNF.

A conversation about training, recovery, mental health, family, obsession, and one simple question:

What if getting better sometimes means doing less?
